This free EYFS Lesson Observation Framework is designed to help schools and early years leaders carry out detailed, evidence-informed observations of EYFS teaching and provision. It provides a clear framework for evaluating practice across key areas including planning and curriculum intent, teaching and interactions, assessment and feedback, environment and resources, behaviour and routines, inclusion, support for all learners, and safeguarding and welfare.
The framework uses detailed descriptors from Urgent Improvement through to Exceptional, helping leaders identify not only whether expected standards are being met, but what stronger and exceptional practice looks like in an EYFS context. It supports careful reflection on curriculum ambition, EYFS alignment, sequencing, high-quality adult-child interactions, language development, responsive assessment, enabling environments, self-regulation, SEND support, safeguarding culture and children's readiness for next steps.
Use this resource to carry out focused EYFS lesson observations and provide clear, constructive feedback linked to children's learning, wellbeing and development. Schools can use the framework independently or integrate it directly into our Flourish Quality Assurance software, where EYFS observation evidence can be stored, analysed and tracked using powerful reporting tools such as heat maps and trend analysis.
