This free Secondary Lesson Observation Framework is designed to support focused, consistent lesson observations in Welsh secondary schools. It provides a clear framework for evaluating classroom practice across key areas including lesson objectives, high expectations, behaviour management, student engagement, differentiation, assessment for learning, feedback, teaching methods, resources, learning environment, displays, and Welsh language integration. The framework also reflects key Welsh education priorities, including the Curriculum for Wales, the four purposes, inclusive practice, ALN support, and the development of Welsh language and culture.
This resource supports school improvement by helping senior leaders, middle leaders, subject leaders, and improvement partners gather meaningful evidence about the quality of teaching and learning. The graded descriptors make it easier to identify strengths, areas for development, and trends across subjects, year groups, departments, or the wider school.
Use this framework to carry out effective lesson observations in your school and provide focused, evidence-based feedback. Schools can use it independently or integrate it directly into our Flourish Quality Assurance software, where lesson observations can be stored, analysed, and tracked using powerful reporting tools such as heat maps and trend analysis.
